Case Study Writing Workshop on Social Determinants of Health in Asia

27 February 2016 – 4 March 2016

More and more researchers show that our social conditions where we live are considered as the most fundamental cause of diseases. Academic communities have demonstrated the importance of protecting the population from the possible dangers of our social life and physical environments. Even now, people of the world increasingly realize that giving treatment to people when they have had sick is an unethical conduct because our social conditions could indeed be changed through government policies. Social determinants of health refers to social conditions where people live, grow, and work that expose people to risk of getting diseases. These conditions include business men, government agencies, and political parties that have the power and the control over industries to influence our social condition and daily life behavior and activities.

Universitas Gadjah Mada is concern on advocating policies which protect people from diseases. With our university networks in Asia, we want to participate in voicing social fundamental causes of diseases around us and make the issues of SDH as the policy makers attention. Last year, we have run an international blended course on social determinants of health with students from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Thailand. Fifteen students participated in series of webinar reviewing and discussing examples of social determinant of health in their countries. The output of the course is a short paper on SDH case. The works will be presented in the 10th Post Graduate Forum on Health Systems and Policies this March in UGM. This 5 days workshop has two focuses; onw is to discuss policy choices on SDH, second is to get students’ SDH case studies as published manuscript.
